How To Maintain Chlorine Levels In Your Commercial Pool

10 September 2024

Commercial swimming pools must maintain a strict hygiene schedule as a top priority, where these busy public environments can quickly become unclean without proper care. In particular, chlorine is essential for disinfecting the water and killing any bacteria, which can flourish in the warm, wet conditions that a pool provides.

The correct amount of chlorine must be maintained in a swimming pool to ensure that conditions are optimal. More specifically, these chlorine levels should stay between 1 and 4 parts per million (ppm), a figure which will vary depending on the size and location of the pool.

This specificity can be achieved with regular pool inspections and water circulation, where the right balance of chemicals needs to be maintained so that swimmers are kept safe.

Read on to find out more about how to maintain chlorine levels in your commercial pool.

Cleaning & Emptying

One of the best ways to maintain the right balance of chemicals in your pool is to adopt a thorough cleaning, filtration and emptying schedule, where this can help to prevent a build-up of chlorine over time. Brushing the pool surface after emptying will also help to remove any debris that could react with the chlorine.

Regular pH Testing

Testing the pH of your pool water is another effective way to ensure that the chlorine distribution is correct. This is because pH levels can impact the effectiveness of chlorine to disinfect the water. Additionally, acidic water can corrode your pool, whilst alkaline water can turn cloudy. As such the ideal pH range is somewhere between 7.2-7.6 depending on your pool conditions.

Shocking

You should also shock your pool water at regular intervals. Shocking is when you add chemicals to the pool in order to keep water conditions well balanced, and to raise chlorine levels. This helps to remove any lingering bacteria as well as old chlorine deposits from your swimming pool.
